THE R. SCOTT HITT INTERNSHIP

IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

THIS INTERNSHIP WILL NOT BE OFFERED IN 2012

A seven to nine month intern program – for college graduates

Program Basis

The R. Scott Hitt Foundation believes that the obstacles facing full LGBT equality are enormous.  Confronting and eliminating these obstacles will require a new generation of activists to launch, lead, and work within organizations that will ultimately prevail in the battle for full equality.  Our goal is to provide an opportunity for the next generation of community leaders to receive a solid foundation in development and leadership skills in order to achieve future success.

Program Goal

The R. Scott Hitt Foundation Internship in Leadership Development :

  • Prepares future leaders for lasting leadership roles within organizations that support the LGBT movement
  • Facilitates connections to leaders and organizations within the LGBT community
  • Supports emerging future leaders’ ongoing activism in support of social justice for all LGBT individuals.

The Internship in Leadership Development will identify, engage, empower and support the next generation of professional and entrepreneurial leaders committed to protecting and advancing LGBT equality.  The seven to nine month program includes a combination of leadership, development, organizational management, networking and professional development training from host organizations. Internship positions are limited to nonprofit organizations dedicated in whole or in part to the advancement of LGBT equality that will pledge (with a signed contract) to accept responsibility for supervising the training of the intern.

Program Guidelines

To help cultivate this new generation of leaders and activists, the program is designed to introduce outstanding, innovative, socially conscious college graduates to the various aspects of nonprofit organizational work. The goal of the internship is that over a seven to nine month period the intern will gain experience in the following key areas of nonprofit work:

  • Communications
  • Development and Board Development
  • Policy and Grassroots Organizing
  • Event Production
  • Managerial Operations

The Internship Program seeks to:

  • Identify promising future leaders with a demonstrated commitment to the LGBT movement
  • Engage future leaders in leadership and professional development through host organizations as well as networking within the LGBT community
  • Empower future leaders to effect positive social change through project-based internships in the nonprofit sector with organizations dedicated in whole or in part to the advancement of LGBT equality
  • Encourage internship recipients to make a life-long commitment to the LGBT movement through full-time employment or volunteer opportunities, by providing continuing education and connections with other internship recipients
  • Assess the completed curricula to see if the intended objectives were accomplished to better enhance the program’s success for future cycles of recipients.
