HITT INTERNSHIP APPLICATION GUIDELINES
Overall, the combination of a sponsoring organization that meets a number of specific criteria along with an exceptionally promising individual candidate.
These ingredients will contribute to a successful application:
The organization should:
1) Be dedicated to an important LGBT-related mission (e.g. civil/legal; health, education, etc.).
2) Have the financial stability, necessary resources and personnel, and a specifically developed curriculum to provide the intern with both broad and in-depth training.
3) Have a track record of success in impacting the LGBT community.
The candidate must:
1) Have demonstrated significant leadership ability as evidenced by accomplishments, awards, elected or volunteer positions.
2) Have demonstrated a strong commitment to, and passion for, social justice, particularly LGBT equality.
REQUIRED SECTIONS OF THE APPLICATION:
A) A cover letter that cogently, crisply, and persuasively reveals why the applicant is the right candidate for the internship. It should also include contact information (home and school), educational experience and degrees. A brief description of the host organization and its ability to provide significant leadership training and exposure in several of these key areas: communications, development, policy, grassroots organizing, event production, and managerial operations.
B) An 800 – 1200 word essay that is passionate and compelling, and that will provide insight into the candidate as a person. It should state how the candidate came to be interested in LGBT equality, why the sponsoring organization was chosen, the candidate’s qualifications (emphasizing leadership potential), and how the candidate intends to use the skills and experience obtained from the internship,
C) A resume detailing education, previous related experience, awards, honors, and GPA.
D) A Sponsor Agreement with a detailed description of:
1) The organization’s mission and accomplishments.
2) The goals of the internship, and the curriculum to be completed while the applicant is interning at the sponsoring organization.
3) The specific personnel who will be supervising the training.
The plan needs to be signed by both the candidate and the Executive Director (or designee) from the sponsoring organization. Please note that, as worthy as an organization’s mission may be, it must have a competent staff of more than a handful of people in order to provide the training and direction we want our interns to receive.
This internship is limited to 501(C)3 organizations based in the United States or a certified Canadian non-profit.
