"All of the great leaders have had one characteristic in common: it was the willingness to confront unequivocally the major anxiety of their people in their time. This, and not much else, is the essence of leadership."

Application Advice

Frequently Asked Questions

For Student Applicants:

How do I find an appropriate organization where I hope to be an intern?

The first step is to identify a pro-LGBT 501(C)3 organization whose mission you support and then contact their leadership about the possibility about submitting your joint application for an internship grant award.

The first three parts of the application are written by the student.  Part four is a detailed job description of what you will learn and the activities you will participate in during the course of the internship.  This section is to be completed by the sponsoring organization in cooperation with the intern prior to the submission of the application.

How can I be sure that the agency that I want to be my sponsoring organization is appropriate for my internship?

Unfortunately certain organizations such as campus-based student centers governed by the campus administration do not qualify as appropriate sponsoring organizations.  Community-based organizations that have not formalized their non-profit status by acquiring a 501(C)3 designation do not qualify as sponsoring organizations. We encourage you to contact our Managing Director to discuss any concerns that you have specific to a potential sponsoring organization. Contact Us

I am in my final year of my undergraduate degree. Am I able to apply for either of the internships?

Yes, as a graduating senior, you are able to apply for either the ANGLE Internship if you plan to be based in Southern California for the term of the internship, or you may apply for the R. Scott Hitt Internship in Leadership Development with organizations based in the USA and Canada.  You may only apply for one internship opportunity in cooperation with one sponsoring organization.

I finished my undergraduate degree more than a year ago, but I have not started work on my Masters or Doctorate yet..  Am I still eligible to apply for the R. Scott Hitt Internship in Leadership Development?

In most cases we will accept your application but we encourage you to contact our Managing Director to discuss any concerns that you have specific to your goals.  Contact Us

Does the RSHF provide a template for how to properly construct the fourth section - the sponsorship agreement?

The RSHF does not provide a template for the fourth section as this as an opportunity for the sponsoring organization and the individual intern applicant to provide an expressive and comprehensive plan of what responsibilities and duties the intern will perform during the internship and the skills that they will acquire through the execution of the plan.

How do I submit the fourth section of the application that requires a signature from the leadership of the sponsor organization?

The sponsorship agreement may be submitted in the PDF application without signatures.  A signed copy of the sponsor agreement should be faxed to our offices if a document scanner is not available.  The fax number is on the Contact Us page of this website.

I do not have Adobe software with which to convert my application to the PDF format.  May I submit my application in another format?

The Adobe.com website provides information on how to convert you documents to the PDF format for submission.

If you are unable to convert your documents, you must contact the Managing Director prior to the application submission deadline for assistance with this issue. Contact Us

Before sending us your final application packet, we recommend emailing the PDF to another computer and opening the files in order to verify that your documents have all rendered themselves in the proper format.

How will I be compensated for my time during the internship?

The R. Scott Hitt Foundation sends all grant awards directly to the intern's sponsoring organization who are then responsible for the disbursement of funds to the intern. While the R. Scott Hitt Foundation openly states the amounts of the awards, the actual compensation received by the intern may be more or less depending on the compensation policies of the sponsoring organization.

Example: One of the Hitt Interns was provided additional benefits by the sponsoring organization in order to comply with the sponsoring organizations own operational policies.

We strongly encourage all applicants to fully discuss the terms of compensation with their sponsoring organziation before submitting their application.

I still have questions about the application process. Where should I address my inquires?

Please feel free to contact our Managing Director directly from the Contact Us page if you have any additional questions that will assist you in submitting the best application possible.
