"If your actions inspire others to dream more,

learn more, do more and become more,

you are a leader."

Welcome

THE board of directors has released the following statement:

It has been almost four years since Scott succumbed to the cancer with which he was diagnosed in 2004, and so bravely fought.  He wanted to ensure that one day he and the generation that was at the forefront of
LGBT and HIV/AIDS activism would be succeeded by a cadre of bright, energetic young men and women trained in the essential skills of leadership.  Thus he spent much of his energy in his final year of life working to create a framework in which this training could occur: The R. Scott Hitt Foundation.

In the four years of our existence, the Foundation has funded internships at sixteen organizations dedicated to the advancement of LGBT equality, training a score of talented young individuals from across the country.

The Foundation has now expended the funds that were raised by Scott and his friends, patients, and colleagues.  At the conclusion of 2011 the Foundation will cease operations, and no additional grants will be awarded.  We know that Scott is smiling in the knowledge that the Foundation he launched has so significantly contributed to enhancing the talents that will be focused on the ongoing struggle for full LGBT equality.

The R. Scott Hitt Foundation believes that the obstacles facing full Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender equality are enormous.  Confronting and eliminating these obstacles will require a new generation of activists to launch, lead, and work within organizations that will ultimately prevail in the battle for full equality.  Our goal was to provide an opportunity for the next generation of community leaders to receive a solid foundation in development and leadership skills in order to achieve future success.

The foundation has awarded annual grants for funding paid internships at pro-LGBT 501(c)3 non-profit organizations.  Applicants did not need to identify as LGBT in order to apply.
